In Parashat (Torah Portion) Sh'lach, 12 scouts (or "spies"), one from each of the 12 Tribes of Israel, are sent ahead to the Promised Land to scope out the terrain and people there, to get a better idea of what the Israelites would be encountering once they finally arrive. The scouts return with phenomenally large fruit: bunches of grapes so heavy that they required two people to carry; figs and pomegranates larger than they had ever seen before... but ten of the scouts report that although this land is clearly has plenty of massive beautiful fruit, its human inhabitants were also huge. One scout even claims that they felt like grasshoppers in comparison to the giants in the land! The people of Israel broke down in tears, disheartened by the challenges ahead of them after decades of wandering in the wilderness.

Only two of the scouts - Caleb and Joshua - remained optimistic, and assured the rest of the people to trust in God's promise to deliver them to the Promised Land safely; yes, there would be battles to wage and work to be done, but there would also be great reward and a better life for future generations. The people were hesitant, but still reassured and ready to move on.

God rewards Joshua & Caleb for their faithfulness by naming them as the successors of Moses in leading the Israelite people once they cross into the Promised Land -- since Moses would not be taking that final leap with them.
